The current challenges facing the villagers and community at large are multiple, namely:
Coffee 'Sierra Leone' , is the brainchild of Dr. Phrancis Momoh, who is a British trained physician, and native of Sierra Leone. Sierra Leone is traditionally known to produce robusta coffee. However, local production and exports were decimated during its civil war from 1990 to 2000. Our vision is to introduce to the global coffee family, a variety of novel tasting arabica beans, produced from the combination of the rich soil and unique climate that Njala offers. Njala is internationally renowned as an agricultural centre of excellence, in Sierra leone. Since its inception in 1963, it has collaborated with international institutions, such as the University of Illinois.
At present, the farming practise by the villagers, is to feed themselves and their families with little or nothing left to sell in order to generate income for other use. Our innovation is to use Arabica coffee farming as a sustainable way of improving livelihood, reduce food insecurity, generate income and create wealth. The coffee shell (waste material) will be recycled or transformed to organic fertilizer, thermal energy and other potential secondary materials. The farm also serves as a training and demonstration unit for students of The School of Natural Resources Management - for teaching, research and community engagement - purposes that will enhance the university’s agricultural and horticultural research and development portfolio.
